Edenton’s history as a cotton producer and market is a foundational piece of the town you see today. Locals in the area founded the Edenton Cotton Mill in 1898 so that the profits made by the farmers could remain in the area. A village of about 70 homes grew around the mill to house the workers. The mill stopped operation in the mid-1990s and became listed as a Nationally Registered Historic Place in 1999. Today you can still visit the Italianate Revival redbrick mill as well as walk or drive through the village of the homes that have since been restored. The Edenton Cotton Mill Museum is across the street from the mill in the old office building, and you can learn about the history of the mill and village and their founders here. It’s open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
