Visit Hicks Field, home of the Edenton Steamers, one of the teams in the collegiate Coastal Plains League. Located in the historic downtown area, this baseball field serves community members of all ages — children grow up watching Steamers games, John A. Holmes High School athletes make use of the stadium and adults love bringing their families to the field in the summer to relive the pastime they grew up enjoying. Hicks Field was built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration and by 1995 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. One of the most exciting sporting events in regional history unfolded on Hicks Field when the local Albemarle League played a game against an all-star team comprised of former Yankees, White Sox, Pirates and others in 1946. Hicks Field underwent renovations in 1997 to give it a Fenway Park atmosphere that now seats 1,200. Check out an Edenton Steamers game in the summer.
