History enthusiasts love checking out the Civil War Trail Sites weaving through the state and delight in finding that northeastern North Carolina played a role in and of itself during the war. The guided walking tour offered by the Historic Edenton Visitors Center includes the area’s history and sites pertaining to the Civil War. Check out St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where a cannon was cast from the church bell in the 1860s, and you can see where the cannon rests today on the Edenton Bell Battery. Signs along the waterfront describe the history of the ironclad CSS Albemarle’s battle against the Union Navy in May 1864. The guided walking tour is offered multiple times during the day, and you can visit the historic sites whenever you please.
