Edenton is the proud home of North Carolina’s oldest government building, 1767Chowan County Courthouse. The beautiful Georgian building on East King Street was commemorated in 1767 and was the product of two previous attempts at establishing a courthouse in Edenton. Back in 1712 the Colonial Assembly commissioned Edenton to build a courthouse to hold assemblies, which made Edenton a seat for the provincial government. Active participants in the American Revolution and the new country's forefathers used the Chowan County Courthouse as a meeting place during the 1770s and 1780s. Today you can visit the courthouse when exploring historic downtown. It's open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
