Edenton attracts its fair share of history enthusiasts, but it’s also a haven for outdoorsy men and women. People kayaking or canoeing in the Edenton area can up their adventure meter by taking an overnight paddling trip to John’s Island. This little island has three camping platforms, where visitors can enjoy downtown Edenton during the day and sleep under the stars at night. Or if you just want a little escape from life’s bustle during the daytime, you can swing by the John’s Island platforms for a picnic lunch or a moment of meditation. This is essentially swamp land, so the best time to visit the platforms is in October and November to avoid the bugs. The platforms are open to daytime visitors, but there is a cost to camp on them.
