Classic, small-town Americana is rarely better represented than by a community-wide Independence Day celebration. Every Fourth of July, the people of Edenton join their fellow countrymen in historic downtown for festive activities and camaraderie. The day begins with the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on the lawn of the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse. As the morning moves into the afternoon, people head to the waterfront at Edenton Harbor. There they find vendors showcasing their artwork and craftsmanship, patriotic food for snacking and lively tunes for dancing. The festivities appeal to people of all ages, with activities from riding the mechanical bull to the watermelon-eating and seed-spitting contests. As dusk sets in, people turn their eyes to the sky as the fireworks illuminate the night with explosions of red, white and blue. This annual event is free and open to the public.
